Yo, Talonjello- Brucie gave you that name. Dad and I love it. And so it shall be.
It's 2012 and you just had your first Christmas. Grandpa Brucie flew all three of us home for Christmas to surprise Grimly. She was so happy to see us and I was relieved to be home in Dublin for Christmas. You, my friend, did AWESOME on the plane rides. The pressure nor surroundings didn't seem to phase you. In fact, it excited you because you were talking up a storm and everyone around us loved the cute social baby. One of the flight attendants said she was in love.
Going into the new year, as everyone does, I've pondered what I want to do in my life. I've been thinking about it for a while and I need to figure out what I want to do for a career once you get into elementary school. I can't be a personal trainer for the rest of my life. I love my job, I love training and helping people change their bodies and build strength but I abhor the sales aspect of the job. It's just not me. I prefer to rely on referrals or casual conversations to obtain clients. Unfortunately, my style isn't very lucrative but since I went back to work in October 2011 after having you, I've had to completely rebuild my clientele. The managers micromanage and are receiving just as much pressure as we are from higher up. It's a corporate trickle-down and makes for a stressful work environment. This effect pretty much what made your dad start his own side business. He loves teaching but he also wanted a job where he was his own boss and could bring in a substantial amount of money to supplement his income.
I need, I want, to find a career that I love just as much but have a reliable paycheck. Loving your job is very important. You can't go into a job field simply because it will make you rich. Money doesn't mean shit if you're not happy. Your dad is one of the hardest working people I know. He'll always do what he can to provide for his family. I want to contribute to the household as well and still adhere to my professional passions.
I am thinking about being a nurse but all I really know is I want to stay in the medical/health field. Don't ever feel bad about changing your career or not knowing "what you want to do when you grow up". It may change and that's ok. Consistency is important to some extent but if you are miserable in a job or even a relationship, it's ok to evaluate your options and where you want to be instead. Your dad and I are in our 30's and we are still figuring it out!
After I decide what I want to do then comes the issue of school. Will I need to go back? Will I need to get more education to do a different job? Probably.
This year looks good so far. I'm going to keep teaching fitness classes which is a passion. I'll figure out what I'm doing with training...or not. Your dad is starting up his business to run summer camps. He's been very busy writing his business plan and will pursue getting back into the classroom this coming school year. He knows his passion is being a classroom teacher, not the after school program director he is now. He can be good at anything he does but his heart is in teaching. Different questions will pop up; what school district will offer him a job? Will we have to move to be closer for his job? How will we balance your child care and our jobs? You are always our priority. It is up to us, our jobs as your parents, to create the best environment for us all to live well. For us, that involves never having to put you in day care. We never want to pay someone else to raise you. It makes a big difference.
Don't you worry about a thing. We will always have your back and make things work. You focus on your education, your experiences, and being our wonderful son. I love you, Talon.
Affectionately,
Mom
