We made it through the registry process. Yeh, it's early in the pregnancy but we're DONE. It's over. 3 hours of our lives trying to think what we'll really need and want. Jason was appalled by the "corporate brainwashing" that our marketing system has in place for our country. Yes, there are a ton of things on that registry list that you don't need but there are plenty more things you do need and plenty more more things you just want. :)
I had already started the process by registering online and adding our first item, the BOB stroller. (see above) What a beautiful piece of metal and fabric.
We got the lowdown from the lady at the registry desk and then she set us out on our journey with a zapper, a list of essentials, a pen, and the task of choosing admist the monstrous selection. Without any question, I gave Jason the zapper. I understand the power of electronic guns and a man's need to feel in control. I think he really enjoyed zapping. Especially after upon leaving the doc office he had said a few weeks ago, "Well the only thing I get to do now is wait." Yeah, Honey, sorry.
My baby only needs one base!
We enter the jungle of strollers and car seats. I figured we would get the big stuff out of the way first. Since we had both already agreed on a stroller, all we had to do was pick out a car seat and an extra base. We all know Jason is a minimalist when it comes to certain things but he tried to tell me we don't need 2 bases for the car seat. It came along with a bit of a tiff, Sarah, we don't need two car seat bases. We don't. I started to realize how much more research I had been doing than him and it pained me to think how clueless he was.
J says: "We'll just go in your car whenever we go somewhere."
Me: BIG deep breath. "Honey, what if I drop the baby off somewhere then you have to pick them up?"
J: "Oh, then I guess we need 2 bases."
Throwing the book at J-Balls.
J handed me the zapper to he could go to the restroom. Don't zap anything while I'm gone! I said ok with my fingers crossed. Maybe I wouldn't but maybe I would. I started to look around. Armed with the almighty zapper, I felt the need to point and shoot. Then I saw those cute grocery cart seat covers. Pink or Blue. Blue, of course. I don't even know the gender of the baby but I'll pick blue circles over pink flowers any day. It happened. ZAP!
J comes back from the bathroom. Did you zap anything? Being the horrible liar that I am, I admitted to my crime. What did you zap? I pointed.
He threw his hands up. Really? A grocery cart seat cover? I tried to plead my case but deep down I knew it wasn't something we needed. I let myself be sucked into the consumer vortex! Sarah, come on! The fun of being in a grocery cart is being in a grocery cart. I started to laugh. He got even more serious. I threw the Babies R Us Registry essentials book at him. Would you chill out? This is supposed to be fun! Point made.
J put both hands on my shoulders and said, "This is why I'm here, Darling. To help you not zap everything in sight. And I'm the fun-hater. So I'm here to ruin all the fun." We both started to laugh.
CLEAN BABY
The next issue was the baby tub. If you have been over to my house, you will know we have a pretty large kitchen sink. I specifically picked it out when the house was being built for how much I love to cook. It fits a TON of pots, pans, plates, cups, and certainly, it will fit a baby.
J wanted to refuse a baby tub. We'll just bathe it in the kitchen sink. Well, of course we will but it can't just lay the kid down in the cold metal stainless steel sink while we hose it down. Why not? It'd be hard to hold the baby's head steady while trying to rinse off its poopy butt with the other hand. I remember watching Sean get washed in the sink with no bath tub. Nice. You mean you want to put a 1 month old child in a kitchen sink with no head or neck support? I think it's a w...I'm sorry, Jason, this one is not up for discussion. We are getting a baby bathtub because we need one. You will use it, I promise. And look! This one has 5 stages. Newborn up to toddler. Done. See? Yay! Love you honey.
3 hours later, we made it out of the store with that being the worst thing that happened. Overall, I think we did pretty well. Thanks J-BALLS!!!!
