Nobody likes me, everybody hates me, guess I'll go eat worms...

OK, maybe I'm being a little dramatic....

This blog entry title was in reference to the insurance companies. What will come of our young country is unknown but health insurance is damn expensive that's for sure!

To add me and Squirt to Jason's insurance was going to be $900 a month. That's what the school could do. Only $5 of that is what he pays for just himself. Since the plan is I am going to stay home and work part-time after the baby-bearing shiznit recovers, we needed to look into finding full health coverage for us.

The kicker really started when St. Vrain SD told all the charter schools they would be on their own starting the 2011-2012 school year for medical/dental/vision insurance. I know our education system is in the shitter but, really? Cut off a school's access to their own district's employee group benefit health insurance? Nice one. School districts (at least in Colorado) are infamous for their weak support of charter schools which are apparently viewed as the black sheep or the the evil stepchild in the system. Why? They take away from the other schools? They suck resources from the other school? Who knows? As far as I'm concerned, St. Vrain should be kissing Jason's school's ass...shall I elaborate? No need. The school, their staff, their dedication to teaching, and their scores speak for themselves. But, I know, I am probably missing pieces of the puzzle and should keep my mouth shut. Whatever, it's my blog, I can say whatever the fuck I want....

I digress....so Jason and I refused to believe we would really have to pay $900 a month on insurance for me and T-Nuts. Moreover, we wouldn't be able to afford it on one full-time salary. As we were told, "The insurance alone will crush you." I felt bad when I remembered I think my sister had to pay more than that per month for a while! We received a referral from a good friend for an independent insurance broker, Chris, who has been a great help. Buying it on our own will be less than tacking on to the school plan. The school did the best they could with the resources with which they were left.

The "nobody likes me..." song comes into play once Chris ran our profile through his insurance program search software. Looks like my IGA-Nephropathy dealio disqualifies me from all insurance. Nobody likes me. Everybody hates me! No one wants to touch IGA-Nephropathy. If you look it up, I won't argue, the textbook description of the disease would scare anyone. Fact is, however, I have probably had this my entire life and never knew it. Taking care of myself and having it diagnosed as early as I did drastically decreases the likelihood that I will confront any of those horrible scenarios the books describe; kidney transplant and/or kidney failure. But, Mr. Health Insurance Company doesn't care about that part. They just see what my medical documents say. That is how the game is played.

The GOOD NEWS is the fact that I got DENIED because of a medical condition makes me eligible for CoverColorado, a non-profit health insurance organization. Premiums are about half what we would have paid! Coverage will be about 90-95% what I would have with any other schmo company and deductible isn't any more than what I have now. Tank will have to find his own insurance (we'll help him when the time comes) but new legislature will make it easier to find insurance for child-only.

Pretty sweet ending after all that. I have my 30 week doctor's appointment this afternoon. I will be writing later to update Y'all!

  3. this is only semi-related, but do they think that the IGA-Neph stuff was related to your difficulty conceiving, or like, is that just a separate issue that was found after the fact?
