What's in a name?

T-Nuts is a mover and groover! Wooh, that kid can dance. During my last energy work session this past Friday, Squirt thrashed and head-banged for a solid 15 minutes. The kid had to have known the energy work was for him and he just may have been making his strong presence known.

Normally, I will feel him give me a little tap about every 10 to 15 minutes. Sometimes he'll chill for hours but it is usually during the day which tells me all my moving around is swinging him to sleep. (22 week old babies have sleep cycles now!) As soon as I slow down for the day, he's banging at the walls. HEY! HEY YOU LADY! I was perfectly comfortable when you were moving around all day, can you keep doing that? It makes me sleepy...

I wasn't sure what I needed to talk about with Bonnie. No pressing issues. Inevitably, she pulls something out of me. We ended up talking about the baby's name. The baby's first name is set. Jason and I have agreed on that even before I ever got pregnant. His middle name is a different story.

"Vaughan" is my maiden name and is now my middle name. Beth was my former middle name. (Nothing against Beth, Mom, just had to shorten things up a bit!) Now do I need to explain much more than a name like "________ Vaughan Zook"? It's pretty fucking cool. Vaughan is my name. It has history. The sound resonates in my gut when I hear it. I had a famous name, "Sarah Vaughan" (Look her up if you don't know who she is...) I am connected, very much so, to Vaughan.

Von is what Jason thought would be cool for Squirt's middle name to be. Originally, I thought it was because Jason much doesn't like a fuss. Von is much less fussy than Vaughan. For months, I didn't give a f***. Von is not my name. I have no connection, no reasoning behind, other than my husband likes it. When I filled out Tron's Kindergarten registration, I would not be able to ignore my chagrin as soon as I wrote "V-o-n".

Bonnie can sense the bond I have with my birth name. Vaughan was always a big deal. Sometimes on how to spell it correctly but mostly because of the power it holds. She suggests I go home and discuss with Jason and tell him exactly what I told her. Have I ever mentioned how good Bonnie is at giving me articulation to my feelings? I go home tell Jason how I feel and that ultimately, I feel strong enough about it that as much as I want T to have a middle name, I am willing to skip it if it is not Vaughan.

I ask him why Von is so important to him (thinking I know what he's going to say). Then he explains that it has to do with Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen, otherwise known as the Red Baron. Jason remembers listening to an audio recording as an elementary student about the Red Baron. Even into Jason's adult life, the story of the fighter pilot holds much gravity. Knowing Jason, I understand why Von is important and it just made my contemplation take a lot longer. I respect it and want to consider it.

  1. Interesting, I'm going to have to plead the 5th as to my opinion about the spelling of the middle name. I do have an opinion but the only opinions that really matter are yours and Jason's.

For now, here is something to think about and hopefully give you piece of mind. Disagreements you may have now, or have had in the past won’t seem as difficult once that GORGEIOUS BABY BOY is born. Regardless as to who wins the spelling of the middle name, who settles, who is willing to give in....nothing is final. Even weeks after Baby Z is born and you two decide one or the other was right, or maybe it will be an after mutual agreement of the spelling…….YOU CAN ALWAYS change it on the birth certificate later!!!

Nothing is FINAL. We did it with Dezmon. The original spelling of his name was DESMOND. After a couple of days we felt the spelling was too COMMON so we changed it to DEZMON!!!!!!
It's a ROCKING name with a Z, a decision Aaron and I both made together that to this day, we are so PROUD of, not to mention all the compliments we get on his name being spelled so different and looking so COOL (LOL)!! Bottom line, as soon as Baby Z is born, you will both come to an agreement as to how to spell it. Babies have those magical powers over their parents. HUGS - tmf ;)
